What's a Monkey to do in Tampa?

What’s A Monkey to do in Tampa?
Behind all the painting of the picture there were several steps that were taken in order to get to that process.  The first were getting some references and sketching out several thumbnails that eventually I picked the most appealing.  After that I elaborated on two that I picked and decided which of the two I picked.  From there I went to the wacom tablet and started off with the drawing where I moved even more ideas around and added new ones.  I then went into illustrator and traced out my image and brought it into photoshop to be colored.  I started with a basic fill in with colors and after that the painting process.   Most of my tools were used to isolate certain areas to make painting easier such as the rectangular selection tool.  Decision making came from experimenting especially with different colors and textured brushes.
The idea behind it all was I wanted a sort of funny cover for the article.  The title being “What’s a Monkey to do in Tampa?” I took the scene to a relaxed monkey sitting on a large sun sofa and eating an orange.  The comical part of the image is the hunter hiding in the bush and shooting several tranquilizers and only hitting the couch because it related to the hunter being unable to catch the monkey by making him a little dumb.   I think my idea was conveyed rather well, from the monkey relaxing to the bolts in the back of the couch.   The only thing I would like to change is the style of work as it’s not much of a title cover page but more of a painting, it doesn’t have a comic/illustrative work.

  14. Cool stuff Jared. I see that Gingher's class helps with making figures even though the monkey isn't human. I like the position he's in. I bet you used a ton of brushes because I see crazy amounts of texture. Great Job!
