What's a Monkey to do in Tampa
I wanted this illustration to be comical and poke fun at the fact that the Animal Trapper could not catch the monkey as much as he tried. When I was sketching I was thinking of Wile E. Coyote and the roadrunner. I picture Vermon Yates as the clumsy coyote never being able to catch his beloved roadrunner. I had many different ideas but when I sketched this up I knew I wanted to illustrate it as it was comical and was very clear in its message.
If it's not obvious already the illustration can be seen as the Animal trapper desperately looking for the monkey, when all the while, the tricky macaque is right next to him. Even if the viewer has not read the article they can see the monkey taunting the man and recognize the playfulness in the illustration. I gave the monkey goofy hair and made him wave a leaf in the air. While on the other hand gave the man a stern look and made him completely oblivious to what's going on. Once again it looks like the monkey is getting away.

I like the detail in the monkeys face, and the shading of his fur
